Announcing iRocker...The first ever iPad App of its kind!

Hello fellow woodworkers,

I know, I know…I just made an announcement recently, so why am I making another? What gives?

Well, to be sure, this one is different from anything else I’ve ever done and I think it deserves a special announcement. You’re going to love it.

Thanks to my uber-talented wife, iRocker, the first ever iPad Woodworking App is now ready to be downloaded for the ridiculous price of just $2.99.

iRocker is truly groundbreaking. It allows for woodworkers to manipulate in 3D the Maloof inspired rocking chair. Each separate part, as well as the rocking chair itself, is able to be rotated for inspection, enlarged, and manipulated in any way you see fit. It’s loads of fun. In addition, you can take and save notes, view never-before-seen videos of the build process, see a complete cut list as well as all the tools available (which can be ordered directly from within the App).

And for you poor souls who have yet to build one of these great projects, you can even order the plans and DVD directly from within the APP as well.

It’s so much fun to play with, you will almost forget to build the actual rocker. Almost.

It’s available by clicking here to visit the iTunes Store. Get iRocker for the iPad!

Thanks for listening and have fun!

Music Stand Plans Now Available!

Some time ago (I forget when exactly. The old memory ain’t what it used to be) I posted some pictures on a woodworking forum showing off one of my Music Stands with a caption that read, “The most difficult project I have ever built.” I wasn’t joking. The Music Stand is challenging, to say the least. In fact, I showed the newly available templates to my dog and he proceeded to yak all over the carpet. Stupid dog.

Anyway, the Music Stand includes full-sized templates and an instruction booklet which outlines the build process in great detail. It is available for order now for the low price of $39.99 plus shipping. Keep in mind that this project is not for the timid. In fact, it isn’t for the slightly bold either. But if you want the woodworking equivalent of a “Mt. Everest” project to climb, get yourself some good hiking boots and let’s get going. I’ll be your Sherpa as long as I don’t have to carry anything.

The plans can be found by clicking here: Music Stand Plans

Best of luck to you all but don’t say I didn’t warn you.

Cheers and happy woodworking!

eBook on Sale

Several months ago, I was kidnapped by a marauding band of bloodthirsty woodworkers up to no good. They tied my hands together, blindfolded me and spirited me away to an unknown workshop. At the point of a very dull chisel, I was held captive.

They forced me to finish my eBook on “Marketing Strategies for the Woodworker.”

I was given food, water and strangely enough, great cigars. I was instructed to type with my toes, day and night.

Thanks to my rescuers and good detective work I made it back, and finished the book.

Outtakes on YouTube

“It’s all fun and games until someone pokes an eye out.”

As children, we’ve all heard that one. But my new outtakes YouTube video shows that it was definitely all fun and games until I started looking (even more) like a doofus. Ah well...maybe I can shake off the giggles long enough to make another video. Wish me luck.

Lumber Jocks

When I hear the name “Lumber Jocks”, images of extremely fit, athletic, young sports/woodworking fans crawl into my foggy brain; muscles rippling beneath their shop aprons as they effortlessly hand plane another piece of 8/4 Rosewood. Then I wonder how the heck I was allowed to be involved (thank goodness they cannot see my rotund, Homer Simpson physique through email).

They've been gracious enough to talk about my work here: Simple Rocker (Scott Morrison Design)

Sometimes, the internet is a glorious thing.

I’m proud to be counted among those athletic woodworker types. Maybe if I wear a Lumber Jocks T-Shirt, I won’t be the last one picked for the softball game.

Woodcraft Catalog

As a woodworker, I receive each month scads of woodworking related catalogs. Being a tool junkie (and most woodworkers are), I go through them looking for something that will make my job easier, safer and more enjoyable. And before you ask, no, that nice new fly fishing rod didn’t pass the “wife approval” test. Dang. I tried.

Anyway, I am very proud to announce that Woodcraft now features many of my videos and templates in their latest catalog. Being a genius, I went right ahead and ordered one of each. Heck, that guy looks like he knows a thing or two.

Woodworker's Journal

I am honored to be included in a recent issue of “Woodworkers Journal.” Imagine my surprise upon opening the issue and finding the ugliest, most disgusting man I have ever seen working with my Butterfly Joint. After pitching a fit, and ferociously pointing to the offending picture while simultaneously dialing my lawyer, my wife calmly announced, “That’s you honey.” Dang.

Butterfly Joint Kit Pre-Order

I wish I had a dollar for every woodworker who has asked, “How do you create that Butterfly Joint?” Then again, I also wish I had a dollar for lots of things, like for each trout I’ve “lost due to unforeseen fly fishing incidents.” Either way, I’d have lots of dollars (and lots more trout). But I digress. At long last, the complete Butterfly Joint Kit is here. With it you will catch more trout than you ever dreamed.

Building a Contemporary Barstool DVD - Available for Pre-Order

The third video/template kit in the series, here I show (in great detail) how to build a cool contemporary barstool. Perfect for scooting up to the bar and pouring a cold one, my barstool is the second most requested video (after, of course, the one where I am pole dancing…but that’s another story). Get out your goggles and sharpen your chisels, this project will make everyone want to “pony up.”

Building a Simple Rocking Chair DVD + Templates

I want all woodworkers, regardless of skill level or experience, to be able to create a comfortable, timeless rocking chair. In this new DVD and Template kit, I show exactly how to accomplish that goal. I believe that with the release of this video, which is the second in the series, my Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame is all but guaranteed (at least in my mind). Does that apron make me look fat?

Billing's Gazette Feature Article

The Billings Gazette – (10/11/2009) - Chair maker creates DVD to teach others how to build fine chairs: In an article by Montana’s Billings Gazette, view it here

I am officially labeled as a teacher. Does that mean I now get summers off? Probably not, but at least I can help ensure the continuance of the woodworking craft by showing others how to build beautiful chairs. All it takes is patience, tools and most importantly, a really good haircut.

New Chairs Exhibited

I've exhibited at the Sun Valley Center Arts & Crafts Festival for the last 4 years. After having just returned from this years show I have to say this was another amazing weekend. I try to keep my booth fresh by bringing one or two new pieces each year, and with the unveiling of my Klismos Chair, Sculpted dining table, and Fireplace Stool, this year was no exception. I'd have to say the highlight of the event is meeting and speaking with my customers face-to-face. I love what I do, and it's so special to hear when others appreciate your hard work. Again, I want to thank Kathryn McNeal and the rest of the folks at the Sun Valley Center, not to mentional all of the volunteers, for putting on an excellent show. I hope to see everyone again next year!

It's time for lunch!

Pull one of my new Contemporary Barstools up to the kitchen counter, then sit back while I pour us an ice cold glass of lemonade. We'll toast to our health, to the joys of being a Grandpa (hard to believe) and to another very successful year as a professional woodworker. I'll put something on the grill and we can stuff ourselves silly. Don't worry, the barstools I've designed are made to withstand many many years of such activity and remain solid, comfortable and beautiful. Give me a call...I'd love to build one just for you.

29 January 2008

My Latest Design

comes in the form of a Klismos Chair. This ancient Greek design is characterized by a broad crestrail and opposing curved front and rear legs. This same timeless elegance is captured with my version of the Klismos Chair.

The 39th Annual Sun Valley Center Arts & Crafts Festival was absolutely amazing. I was awarded Best in Woodworking for 2007, a great honor, which includes an automatic invite for the 2008 show. I want to thank Kathryn McNeal and the rest of the folks at the Sun Valley Center, not to mentional all of the volunteers, for putting on an excellent show. See you guys next year...

New Chair Unveiled

My latest piece is finally complete! I'm very excited about the new Butterfly Occasional Chair, which can be seen here in Claro Walnut. When designing this chair, I wanted to convey sensual curves as well as organic strength. Much like the curves of a womans shape, the lines are soft and easy on the eye. To accomplish this, I've used my trademark Butterfly Joint, which provides incredible strength between the legs and seat while remaining consistent with the overall design.

I've just been invited to exhibit in the number 1 rated show in the country. Wahoo. New Sculpted Bench

My latest project, a unique sculpted bench, is now complete. The contemporary design of this piece features a "molded" shape. This individual stool also serves as an great ottoman when paired with a Classic or Pemberley Rocking Chair.

18 January 2006

My Latest Design...

I try to sketch on a daily basis, and often these sketches yield new and interesting designs in furniture. One recent design was a rocking chair and cradle combination. My latest endeavor is an ottoman, though it can be used as a bench or stool as well. This contemporary piece will be added to my site very soon; stay tuned...

Show Piece Sells

The response to my Rocker Cradle, which was unveiled and subsequently sold at the WDC this past weekend, was nothing short of spectacular. Not your typical art show, this was by far the toughest place I've exhibited. Surrounded by many of the finest woodworkers in the country, furniture was the name of the game; at least for a majority of the artists. I knew only the most unique of rocking chairs would do, and that's exaclty what I managed to create. Thanks to everyone who stopped-by to say as much.

20 September 2005

Sneak Preview at the WDC

The Western Design Conference is finally here and all I can say is, "it's about time". I couldn't wait to unveil my new piece, which was 3 years in the planning/building. The show opens to the public on Thursday, September 22, but you can get a sneak preview of my Rocker Cradle.

Sunny Days in Sun Valley

Beautiful weather and great entertainment are just a few of the reasons why Sun Valley makes for an excellent art show venue. Promoted by the Sun Valley Center for the Arts, this show continues to rank among the top 20 in the Pacific Northwest. This exclusive show is limited to 140 of the top artists in the country. Not only was I among the honored exhibitors, but the show itself was a huge success. My booth had non-stop visitors for the entire duration of the event. I will definitely apply in 2006!

Chairs find Success at Jackson Hole

I just returned from exhibiting at Art Fair Jackson Hole. Although my first time at this show, the response to my rocking chairs was overwhelming. At times the crowd around my booth was three deep, making for a hectic yet exciting experience. I want to thank all who took the time to stop by and say hi.

Jackson Hole was a great setting for this art show; one of the most beautiful and dramatic areas I've visited. Not only were my chairs a hit, I had the good fortune to meet several other very talented woodworkers. I look forward to next years' event and hope see you there.
